Amboseli National Park is one of the classic images of East Africa with the herd of elephant strolling across the plains among other wildlife species with the snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The ecosystem mainly savannah grassland spread across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The park is also famous for providing a perfect view of this world's tallest freestanding mountain, rising an impressive 5 kilometers above the plains. The best time to view the majestic mountain is at dawn and sunset, when the clouds lift and the light is both clear and soft.
Kilimanjaro was once part of Kenya, but on the marriage of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, Queen Victoria gifted it to her beloved grand son, whose colony Tanzania then was, as the perfect wedding present. The mountain now provides water for the park, wonderful views and of course, the most glorious background for animal photography.
In the west of the park lies Lake Amboseli, a seasonal soda lake sometimes with flamingos. Amboseli is a fabulous place to visit. The overwhelmingly lovely views, good wildlife sightings and indigenous Maasai lifestyle are too good to miss!
Amboseli National Park is located about 220 Km from Nairobi and covers an area of about 390 sq Km. |
