Lake Bogoria National Park is situated 50 Km north of Nakuru town. It is well known for its hot springs dotted all around the southern shore of the lake. The hotspringserupt along the lakeside, 5 meters into the air and produce a strong pungent sulfur smell known to have therapeutic values, hence are natural spas and steam baths. However scenic, the water is dangerously hot and visitors are asked to tread carefully. The lake's vegetation is composed of dry bush, grasslands and riverine forests.
The water is very highly alkaline supporting no fish life at all and contains blue-green algae that attract thousands of flamingoes that flock the lake and add color turning the shores pink. The lake is the perfect spot to see the rare Greater Kudu. Other animals found include buffalo, zebra, impala, dik dik, gazelle, klipspringer and monkey among others. The picnic site is readily available for visitors along with a dramatic backdrop of the Laikipia escarpment.
Nearby we have Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake. It is most famous as an ornithologist's paradise with 500 bird species, hippos and crocodiles.
Baringo Community Museum and Reptile Park educates local people and visitors about reptile species. The museum displays several species of snakes, including the black mamba, puff adder, boomslang (tree snake) and spitting cobra as well as monitor lizards, crocodiles and a central pit shared by endangered tortoises and harmless stripe bellied sand snakes.
Ol Kokwe Island in the middle of the lake is an ideal place for birding, but also for sighting plenty of crocodiles and monitor lizards at the waters edge.
Lake Bogoria National Reserve is located about 260 Km from Nairobi and covers an area of about 107 sq km.
