Shaba National Park


Shaba National Reserve a beautifully scenic place, dominated by Shaba Hill in the southern section and a perfect place for leopard with it's rocky outcrops and ravines.  The Uwaso Nyiro River cuts through the reserve with deep gorges and waterfalls on the river, open grasslands, rocky hills, dusty plains, springs and swamps. It is a place where the quality of the experience exceeds the quantity of wildlife!
Shaba National Reserve derives its name from a massive cone of volcanic rock that dominates the region. It is here that the famous conservationists George and Joy Adamson tamed Elsa the lioness.           
With the exception of the rhino, wildlife found here include beisa oryx, buffalo, cheetah, crocodile, eland, elephant, gazelle, gerenuk, grevy's zebra, dik dik, hippo, impala, leopard, lion, reticulated giraffe, spotted hyena, striped hyena, vervet monkey, warthog, waterbuck, African wild dog and zebra.
Shaba National Reserve is located about 70 Km North of Mount Kenya and covers an area of about 220 sq Km.
