Sweetwaters Game Reserve

Sweetwaters Game Reserve is a 24,000 acre private ranch between the foot hills of the Abedares and the magnificent snowcapped Mount Kenya. Its popular waterhole is floodlit by night, providing excellent game viewing including the big five. The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains guarantees an unforgettable safari experience!
The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a 200 acre was opened in 1993 in a negotiated agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Jane Goodall Institute. The facility was initially established to receive and provide life-long refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from west and central Africa. An initial group of three chimpanzee orphans were brought to the sanctuary from a facility in Bujumbura, Burundi in 1993. This group of chimpanzees needed to be evacuated due to the outbreak of civil war in Burundi. This was followed in 1995 by another group of 9 adult chimpanzees, followed by another 10 in 1996.
In 2004 the reserve was purchased by Fauna and Flora International, a UK based conservation organization. The Sweetwaters game reserve has now been extended to encompass the entire ranching area to create the “Ol Pejeta Conservancy”, approximately 90,000 acres. This has created the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, with the aim of generating profit from wildlife tourism and complementary activities (including cattle) for re-investment into community development in the local area.
Game rides on horseback or perched atop camels within the sanctuary is a unique experience. Sweetwaters Tented Camp has three camels each carrying two people, and a guide always accompanies guests. The camel safari lasts for 1 hour and can be taken at any time subject to availability from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Visitors to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy have free access to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which is open daily from 9:00am to 10:30am and 3:00pm to 4:30pm.
Sweetwaters Game Reserve is located about 160 Km from Nairobi.
